In central Tokyo, trains were stopped and passengers walked along the tracks to platforms. NHK said more than 4 million buildings were without power in Tokyo and its suburbs.
A large numbers of people waited at Tokyo’s Shinjuku station, the world’s busiest train station, for service to resume so they could go home. TV announcers urged workers not to leave their offices to prevent injuries in case of more strong aftershocks
The north-east of Japan was hit the hardest, but it was felt in Tokyo too, some 400km away. Several smaller tremors were created off the back of the larger earthquake, along with 33m-high tidal waves and fires dotting the country. Gawker has a video from CNNshowing a blanket of mud engulfing fields and houses, with a couple of fires literally riding the wave. Jalopnik found a video of a boat going around and around in a whirlpool, and of a wave hitting an airport. It's not until you watch footage of the disaster that you realize how terrifying it must be for everyone on the ground.
